A gentle morning walk round Parkwood Springs and Roe Wood, to see fine views and explore some lovely woodland. The walk will take about 1.5 to 2 hours. Meet in town at 10am near WH Smiths in the Transport Interchange to get the bus, or for a prompt start at 10.40am by the statue at the entrance to Parkwood Springs on Shirecliffe Road/Cooks Wood Road. Thursday 17th May 2012 The Full Monty Walk
meeting at 5.50pm (in town) or 6.10pm (at Parkwood Springs)
This is a 3 mile walk with Sheffield Walking Group (20s-30's) but all are welcome. It is part of the Walk Sheffield walking festival.
You can keep your hat (and everything else!) on for this linear walk exploring a few of the Full Monty film locations in the Hillsborough and Langsett area. From Parkwood Springs we'll come down to Infirmary Rd, up to Ruskin Park, finishing at the Burton St Foundation where a number of scenes were filmed. Some uneven downhill paths and some uphills. Finishing at the New Barrack Tavern for food / drinks.
Start: Shirecliffe Rd/Cooks Wood Road (entrance to Parkwood Springs) End: New Barrack Tavern, Penistone Rd
Transport: Meet at Arundel Gate Bus Interchange in good time to catch the No. 72 Bus to Pitsmoor leaving at 5.50pm. Or meet at 6.10pm at the walk start. Thursday 17th May 2012, Another Side of Parkwood Springs
meeting at 6.40pm (in town) or 7.00pm (at Pitsmoor Post Office)
A 4 mile circular walk, again part of Walk Sheffield, this time with Sheffield Group of the Ramblers. All are welcome. We will explore some of the less-visited parts of Parkwood Springs, starting and finishing at Pitsmoor Post Office, Burngreave Road. There will be a steep and rough descent, so stout shoes needed - walking boots preferred.
Meet at Arundel Gate mini-interchange to catch the 18:46 76 Ecclesfield bus to Pitsmoor Post Office, or meet at the Post Office for a prompt 7pm start. Leader: Neill Schofield
Sunday 22nd April 2012, 11.00am to 1.00pm, Parkwood history walk
Join the Rangers and the Friends of Parkwood to explore and find out the hidden histories of Parkwood. Meet at the entrance to Little Pear Tree Field, Shirecliffe/Cooks Wood Roads. (Please note that this event was previously publicised at starting at 1.30pm to 3.30/4pm)
Please remember that you can access Parkwood Springs on foot at any time. You may want to print out our map which indicates the location of the various entrances and main footpaths, as there is limited signage on site for the time being.
Saturday 10th March 2012, 12noon-1pm, tour of 'Making Tracks' planned mountain bike routes
Following our 'clean up' morning, Jon Dallow (Woodlands Officer) will be leading a tour of the planned mountain bike routes for Parkwood Springs. The new cycle trail is funded by Sport England to be built from April 2012.

Saturday 10th March 2012, 10am to 12 noon, Practical 'clean up' morning
We will be working with the Rangers on litter picking and generally tidying up the site. All tools and materials will be provided. Meet us in the car park/near the new sculpture at the Cooks Wood Road entrance.
Thursday 8th March 2012, Friends group meeting, 7pm, St Catherine's School,

The main purpose of this meeting will be to consider Viridor's restoration plans. Following their presentation to us on 28 September, we now have a few copies of their large plan drawings which we will be able to comment on, with a view to preparing an agreed set of comments as a formal response on behalf of the Friends group.

Saturday 22nd October 2011, 5pm, Beacons event
This spectacular annual event returns to Parkwood Springs for its 5th year. The event starts at 5pm, with storytelling by Shonaleigh, entertainment, and a fantastic finale of fireworks after dark! It's free to attend so bring your family and friends and help us to make this the biggest and best Beacons event yet! (Please note that children must be accompanied by an adult).
Saturday 8th October 2011, 10.30am-12.30pm, Funghi walk
Find out about the funghi on Parkwood Springs, with Council ecologist 'Ziggy' Senkans. Meet at Little Pear Tree Field, by the Cooks Wood Road/Shirecliffe Road entrance at 10.30am, for one and a half to two hours walk. Dogs allowed on leads.
Wednesday 28 September 2011, 6pm, special meeting re Viridor's restoration plans
This special meeting will be an opportunity for Friends of Parkwood Springs to hear Viridor present their plans for the restoration of the landfill site once its closed. It will take place at St Catherine's School, Firshill Crescent, S4 7BX, at 6pm. We hope you will be able to join us.

The next open meeting of the Friends of Parkwood Springs will take place at St Catherine's School, Firshill Crescent, S4 7BX from 7pm. This will be a chance to catch up on events that took place over the summer and to hear the latest progress report on our Gateway Art Project. Everyone is welcome to attend and we hope to see you there.
Tuesday 26th July 2011, Teddy Bears Picnic and Games
Fun lunch time activities for younger children, with the Rangers. 12 noon to 1.30pm. Bring a picnic and a favourite teddy or soft toy. Meet at the entrance to the playing fields (Cooks Wood Road/Shirecliffe Road).

Sunday 19th June 2011, Forest Garden planting day and barbecue
Meet at 10am at the Cooks Wood Road/Shirecliffe Road entrance (at Little Pear Tree Field) to stroll over to the Forest Garden site, or join us over there later. We will spend some time working on the Forest Garden. Ed Thatcher will be there to show us what to do - no experience necessary! At lunchtime we will break for a barbecue. If you can, bring some food to share - something to cook on the barbecue perhaps, some salad or whatever. Hometime around 4pm.

We hope that you will already have joined us before 7pm for the Gateway Art Project event (above) but if not, please meet us at 7.00pm at the Cooks Wood Road/Shirecliffe Road entrance (at Little Pear Tree Field) to stroll over to the Forest Garden site. The Community Forester, Ed Thatcher, and others involved in the planning and design will tell us all about what has happened so far, and the plans for the future. All welcome! If you would like to, bring a light folding chair or stool.
Wednesday 8th June 2011, 5pm-7pm, Gateway Art Project
Meet at 5pm at the Cooks Wood Road/Shirecliffe Road entrance - there will be a marquee at the heliport entrance (near the car park). Come and meet the artist Jason Thomson and see his designs for the new artwork. This is an important opportunity to find out what's happening, so please do let your friends and other local residents know about it. There will also be opportunites for some short walks with Jon Sharrocks from the Ranger Service who can tell us more about the history of the site. You are also welcome to stay on from 7pm for a Guided Visit to the Forest Garden (see below).
Thursday 19th May 2011, 6.50pm, Guided walk - 'A Burngreave Exploration'
A four mile walk exploring Parkwood Springs, Roe Wood and Burngreave Cemetery, and learning a little about local history. Some hills – stout shoes needed. Meet at 6.50pm outside the Mangla Restaurant, Spital Hill (or meet at Arundel Gate at 6.45 to get the bus there.) Returning to Spital Hill by about 9pm. Meet at Little Pear Tree Field, just by the Cooks Wood Road/Shirecliffe Rioad entrance at 1pm. You are sure to find it interesting and learn something new! The walk will last until about 3pm.
Saturday 19th February 2011, from 10am to 1pm, Litter pick
Meet at 10am at the car-park off Cooks Wood Road/Shirecliffe Road, to litter-pick the area below the football pitches. Bags and tools supplied. Get some fresh air and spruce up the area before the spring! There'll be a friendly atmosphere, and we'll make a real difference!
Wednesday 9th February 2011, at 7pm, Friends group meeting at St Catherine's School, Firshill Crescent, S4 7BX.
We will hear about the progress on improving the entrance to Parkwood Springs at Cooks Wood Road/Shirecliffe Road, and take forward the ideas raised at the last meeting about fruit growing on the site. One of the Community Foresters will be there. We'll also have the usual opportunity to raise problems and ideas for the future. We hope very much to see you. The meetings are always friendly and informal, so if you haven't been before do give it a try!
